Home Should Reflect Your Lifestyle…..Reetu Shiboo Deshpande….Creative Director

In this modern day of living, there is no doubt that the contemporary movement has affected every aspect of our daily lives. From our cars, fashion and technology to the world of design in architecture and interiors. Many use the term contemporary or modern interchangeably to mean a more relaxed break of traditional norms and new concepts of richness of design and modern age thinking. Modern can also refer to a time period of design style from the 1920s to 1950s. From bringing in light to dark spaces to opening up floor plans and introducing clean-lined furnishings, there are many ways to bring contemporary flair into your living.

At the time of designing our homes, we all try to develop unique patterns and collect the best of creative ideas. Which is why interior design can rarely have any rules attached to it at the beginning. The problem is, however, that the more freedom you’re given to develop a design concept statement yourself, the more challenging it becomes to depict the right additions. Interior design concept statements combine the most important ideas and processes contained in your interior design programme.
When we decide to hand it over to an interior designer, it doesn’t mean giving up total control of decorating our home. These professionals can introduce us to ideas and decorating options that you wouldn’t have otherwise considered or knew were possible. In fact an interior design concept statement, whether given by a qualified interior designer or created by ourselves, must effectively convey your inspiration and vision for a space. It briefly addresses how we went about creating the design and handled specific design challenges. The statement should also articulate the room’s overall ambience.

Aesthetic beauty

Modern interior design has come into its own and promises to turn your home into a masterpiece of aesthetic beauty without sacrificing one moment of practicality or function. Contemporary, however, refers to décor that is much more current. Even designs that were contemporary in the 2000s may no longer be considered contemporary but rather vintage. In five or ten years from now, contemporary design will likely have a different look and feel than contemporary design today. Where modern design has a specific look and feel, contemporary design is ever-changing, due in part to the availability of materials and pieces.

The latest interior design

Modern and contemporary, while seemingly synonymous, can often mean quite different in certain contexts. Contemporary interior design means essentially the latest interior design fashions. Modern interior design will often refer to “mid-century” design. Even with these different meanings they will still easily converge. You and your interior designer may decide to borrow elements of 60s or 70s interior design, but this doesn’t mean you’re going to go out and find the most hideous wallpaper and upholstery simply for nostalgia. In any event, whether you’re talking about contemporary or modern interior design, there are some things one should keep in mind while deciding home’s decor.

Because contemporary design is always evolving, it easily relates to other styles no matter what they are. A space of almost any given style can have contemporary elements due to the very nature of contemporariness – that is, as a space’s design changes to accommodate the shifting preferences, tastes, and needs of the people who live there, that evolution inherently creates a contemporary space. Cleanliness and smooth surfaces without intricate details characterise contemporary design. However, that doesn’t mean your home will look stark or cold, because the days of boxy furniture and eccentric decorating are long gone.

Use Natural Material

Today’s updated contemporary design is a blend of comfortable, liveable elements that create a sophisticated, fresh look and feel and to create a contemporary look in any home, these key elements would essentially be required to be incorporated: Lighting, Colour with Accent, Use of Natural Material, Texture, Wood Tones, Airiness, Bare Floors, and Open Floor Plans etc.

Luxury details

One of the areas of contemporary design that everyone loves are the ‘Masked Details’. You see the innovative technology in our smart world of technology for phones, computers, and also in our homes. Contemporary details of wireless and remote access controls for controlling electronics, heating/cooling systems, lighting, security and more are all masked behind the beautiful details. We must try bringing innovative controls into our home lifestyle and see how much a contemporary home will feel. Technology has become the masked luxury details to add to contemporary homes.

There is no doubt that very design age borrows and influences elements from each other. The contemporary era of design is more about letting go of strict and formal design rules and becoming more open and minimalistic in approach. Whether you decide to have a more electric home and mix and match past eras or you would prefer to become ultra-modern in nature, your home should reflect your life style. Release your old world thinking that every piece in your home has to have a label and enjoy contemporary living that is reflected throughout your sweet home.
