When ‘Naam’ Matches ‘Kaam’.

Silky Nanda, fashion designer, is a recipient of several awards, such as Amazon India Fashion Week Award and Smart India Award, to name just two. To know her style we need to know that it was just a Fashion Show by Manish Malhotra in Mumbai. This was enough for Silky as a kid to dream of becoming a fashion designer. Unlike other kids, Silky was pretty determined about pursuing her passion. Therefore, she did a professional study from London.

Silky Nanda is of the firm belief that time is ripe for Indo-western costumes. She loves to design gowns in Indo-western boundaries. ‘Cuts’ and ‘Drapes’ are her style as a designer. Not more than a year back, one of her designs having a ‘Tunic with Pants’ became a rage across the country. Not just that. The design made a mark in Indonesia and Nairobi. According to Silky, “Fashion for designers in India is not as it sounds. It’s a challenge given by their clients.” Lucidly explaining the challenges and opportunities for fashion designers, Silky recalled the days after demonetisation, famously announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 8 pm on November 8, 2016. “It was a lightening strike on our pockets. Everything was on hold but ‘shaadi season’ was never off the table. In fact, it threw a challenge before us doubling our work. There was less budget but high expectations of designs.”

Silky Nanda is of the view that each day is new. She wants the positive things to inspire everyone. She teaches and tries to motivate the designing aspirants with a truth that there are different body types. When one goes out in the job market, don’t let yourself get zoned to what you have studied. Client servicing is an art by truth, she says.
